Olympia Theatre

The Olympia Theatre in the Temple Bar district combines a busy, contemporary multi-purpose venue with a Victorian music hall's charm. Located at at 72 Dame Street, the theatre sits opposite Dublin Castle and is a 15-minute walk from both Grafton Street and O'Connell Street. There are two pubs in the theatre, accessible through a door located just behind the orchestra section.

History

The Victorian classic building originally opened as The Star of Erin Music Hall in 1876. Renamed Dan Lowery's Music Hall in 1881, it finally became known as the Olympia Theatre in 1923. The Olympia's long-standing Friday and Saturday series Midnight at the Olympia brought numerous musical performers to Dublin. Actors Alec Guinness, Peggy Ashcroft, Noel Coward, and even Laurel and Hardy have performed at this famous theatre. In November of 1974, the Olympia was forced to close because of structural damage when parts of the ceiling fell. A restoration fund was established, saving the Olympia from demolition. City Councillors placed a preservation order on the theatre. Following restoration, the Olympia Theatre reopened 14 March 1977.

Christmas Pantos

The Olympia, along with Dublin's Gaiety Theatre and the Helix Theatre present annual Christmas pantomimes. Recent notable productions include Aladdin, Cinderella, and Robin Hood.

Opening Times

The Olympia Theatre opening times are subject to the performance schedule. However, the box office is usually open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 AM.
