Kildare Village

Kildare Village, located on the M7 motorway within an hour from Dublin, is Ireland’s largest outlet shopping mall and features only premium brands. A trip to Kildare Village is a popular excursion from the city, with a daily coach service departing regularly from both Dublin airport and Dublin city centre. The coaches aren't just filled with Irish shoppers – at least 25% of visitors to Kildare Village are tourists.

About Kildare Village

Located outdoors, the mall is busier in spring/summer months when the weather is favourable. Part of an international chain of outlet villages known as the "Chic Outlet Shopping" franchise, Kildare Village has an upmarket, New England character. Genuine bargains are available in its many stores, with each big-name brand residents required to discount their prices by a minimum of 40%.   Bargain-hunters should bear in mind these caveats:

  • The very best bargains get snapped up soon after they are put on the shelves
  • A lot of the stock is from the previous season
  • You may find the brand you want, but you're not guaranteed to find the particular items/size/style that you want

More Tips

  • To avoid crowds, go on a weekday and/or during an off-peak month
  • Arrive by 10am when the mall opens, especially if arriving by car, as competition for the 850 free parking spaces is fierce
  • Before you travel, it is worth signing up on the Kildare Village official site to receive promotions -- new sign-ups often get a one-day VIP day pass, which you collect at the information booth at arrival, giving you an additional 10% discount on all items
  • Dogs (with the exception of guide dogs) aren't allowed at Kildare Village but the mall provides a kennel service. Ask at the information booth, which is open from 9.30am, about day kennel fees.

Possible Downsides

One criticism levelled at Kildare Village is the lack of restaurants at the mall --- as well as the things to do for non-shoppers. The stores at Kildare Village are mainly centred around clothes/fashion, homeware, sports and outdoor. There are no bookstores, electronic or other kinds of stores. While a trip to Kildare Village can be heaven for shoppers, it can be dull for others.

Playground

There is a nice children's playground at the village, near the restaurant. Suitable for children aged three/four and upwards, the playground has a slide, swings, see-saw and climbing frame, with soft surfaces. Surrounding the playground area are benches, where families can eat packed lunches.

Cafes and Restaurants

The main on-site restaurant, L'Officina, is operated by Dunne & Crescenzi, who are a well-known name in Dublin, having a few other Italian restaurants in the city. Despite big crowds and peak times on busy shopping days, the food is of high quality, if a little pricey. For coffee, there’s a Starbucks near the centre of the mall -- but long queues start to form as soon as it opens at 10am and don't let up all day. Alternatively, a small crêpe stand called Crêperie Angelie serves good coffee if you don't mind consuming it outdoors. Crêperie Angelie also offers both savoury and sweet crêpes, with delicious flavour such as Nutella and banana, as well as burgers and hot dogs. Perhaps the wisest option for the budget-conscious and crowd-averse is to take a packed lunch to Kildare Village. There are benches near the playground where food may be consumed.
